We spent 5 mins getting the Lowdown with Birchbox-come-youtube wondergal Deepica Mutyala, talking all things beauty, including how to get Kylie Jenner's pout.
What lip trends are you currently loving for Spring? I know people have mixed opinions on the overlining your lips trend, but I am a total fan. I don’t like the extreme cases but the idea of “lip contouring” can really help accentuate your lips and create an illusion. I did a tutorial for Birchbox on a subtle ways to do this here - you can use the LAQA Fat Lip Pencil in Fairyblood to create a similar look shown in the video!
And beauty trends in general? New year is all about glowy, luminous skin. The best way to achieve this (besides a TON of water of course) is with a killer highlighter. I can always tell in pictures when I’m not wearing highlighter because my skin won’t look as radiant. Because I have dry skin, I tend to gravitate towards cream highlighters but if you have oily skin, I recommend getting a powder one. I use the Bio Brightener from W3LL PEOPLE daily - all natural but you wouldn’t know it from the performance of the product. SO good!
What is your fav LAQA product and why? I am a loyal Laqa Fat lip Pencil lover and have been since I first discovered LAQA (proof is in the insta posted this baby 20 months ago..
Being a bold lip addict, the fat lip pencil’s high pigmentation levels add the perfect pop to my lips. Also, the formula is EVERYTHING - it’s moisturizing but not so glossy to where the product feels slippery.
My current favorite shade of the Fat Lip Pencil is Siren Song - it mimics Pantone’s Color of the Year Marsala and just a fun, on trend shade for this year. The 90’s are back baby and I’m fully embracing it!
What is one quick beauty hack (tip) you cannot live without? Dark spot corrector: If you have dark circles under your eyes, use a bright red/orange lipstick as a base under your eyes before applying concealer. The bright pigmentation of the lipstick evens out your skin tone. I actually use LAQA & Co.’s Fat Lip Pencil in Ring of Fire to do this trick all the time! I recently launched a YouTube channel with a video on how to do this trick at youtube.com/deepicam.
Current obsession: beauty product you can’t get enough of? Beautyblender: I use it everyday and am obsessed. It’s especially helpful when you’re contouring to blend all of the contour lines together with zero streakage. I won’t go back to using any brush again. Tip: make sure to wet the brush to where it doubles in size before using.
No matter who you're ready to impress this V-Day, get jiggy with this cute-as-it-is-easy Valentine's mani. This design created by one of Birchbox Soho’s resident nail artists, Arlene Hinckson, gives the traditional heart mani a discreet makeover.
Use LAQA & Co.’s Nail Polish in Tweedledee to create what will become the center heart in the design. Position your brush on the middle-left side of your nail, then swipe it from there to tip of your nail. Repeat the same process on the opposite side, resulting in a “V” shape. Repeat with a second coat.
Use LAQA & Co.’s Nail Polish in BMX Bandit to paint on the final heart. Starting on the left side, closer to the tip of the nail, mimic the same heart shape design from the last step, pulling the brush to the end of the nail. Repeat on the right side, then follow with another coat.
Cut and apply three pieces of striping tape to your nail (two vertical, one horizontal) + can be purchased from most nail supply stores .
Apply two coats of one color per box when doing this, go slow to make sure no paint goes over the edge of the tape or this will mess up the design :-).
After the colors have been painted, remove the striping tape while the paint is still wet. Apply a clear top coat of your choice, I used a clear polish from Laqa & Co. The colors used were chuffed, squid ink, tweedledee, and dust to dust.
